Mayor Bowser Requests Federal Disaster Declaration for DC to Assist with COVID-19 Response and Recovery

Friday, March 27, 2020

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser requested that President Trump issue a Major Disaster Declaration for the District of Columbia as a result of the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Declaration would provide assistance to the District’s Emergency Response Services and to residents and businesses that have been severely impacted by COVID-19. Through the declaration, the District has requested federal emergency assistance for disaster unemployment, crisis counseling, and other programs to slow the spread of COVID-19 and respond to immediate threats to lives, public health, safety, and the environment.

Mayor Bowser has declared both a local state of emergency and a public health emergency, and has authorized the activation of the District’s Emergency Operations Center.
